In 2016 I was invited, as a design consultant, to design the personal iOS app for Cui Jian — the godfather of Chinese rock.
His brief was deceptively simple: feet on the yellow earth, eyes on the stars.
Building from that single line — and from his musical voice, the personality of his then-new album Light·Frozen, and my own long relationship with his work — I leaned on the phone's hardware, the gyroscope above all, to make three gestures the spine of the app: walking with the phone unveils different scenes around you in 360°; raising it fills the screen with a vast field of stars; lowering it plants your own feet firmly on the yellow earth.
